Job Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Insures accurate coding of outpatient services such as ED, ambulatory care surgery diagnoses and procedures, ancillary services, sequencing of assigned codes, and final assignment of DRG/CPT, based on UHDDS guidelines and ICD-10/CPT coding protocol.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  1. AHIMA or AAPC applicable coding credential such as CCS-P, CCS,

  2. CPC-H required.

  3. Must possess immediate computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, keyboarding, email communication and password management.

  4. Minimum of 2 years coding experience in an acute care setting.

  5. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology/DRG/CPT/APC systems, statistical study methods/review.

  6. Quantim/Clintegrity 360 encoder experience desired.

  7. Prior experience with EHR applications required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Maintains current knowledge of DRG/CPT and APC methodology and related legislative coding and reimbursement changes regarding ICD-10 and prospective payment systems.

  2. Code and sequence all ambulatory care diagnoses and procedures 3-4 days post discharge using APC, CPT and ICD-10 for coding assignment.

  3. Ensures proper reimbursement on all coded records by:

  4. Charts with incomplete documentation:

  • Query Physician

  • Discuss with CDI

  • Review CDI recommendations:

    • confer with CDI nurse

    • discuss with manager

  • Participate in Quarterly reviews done by Compliance.

  • Respond to requests for statistical data and special study data when requested.

  • Participate in training provided by CH or other required training.

  • Assist in training others.

  • Respond to 3rd party coding inquiries.

  • A strong belief in the organization’s goals and objectives for utilizing EHR systems and excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Skill and experience in EHR charts.

  • Capable of independent work ethic with minimal supervision.

  • Other duties as assigned by Manager.
