Job Description

POSITION LOCATED IN MOSES LAKE, WA

OVERALL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Infusion Nurse is responsible for the nursing management of patients being infused with chemotherapy and biologic therapy agents, fluids and other medications, and the nursing management of central lines. The nurse provides direct patient care; consults with physicians and nurses; and assists with patient/family education, care coordination and symptom management of patients that treated in the infusion department. This position will work in collaboration with all members of the healthcare team to achieve the best possible outcomes for the patient.

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL:

1. Infuses chemotherapy, biologic therapy and other agents:

a. Performs a nursing assessment prior to each infusion or treatment per policy and procedure of the medical center.

b. Has knowledge of each agent infused including potential drug toxicities and side effects, proper methods of administration, and related interventions

c. Safely prepares infusion and pump set-up for each drug that is infused

d. Follows parental administration policy and procedure of the medical center for the medications given.

e. Monitors patient during and if applicable after the infusion, observing for any untoward effects

f. Provides patient and family teaching about treatment and side effects in collaboration with the other members of the healthcare team.

g. Follows the ONS/ASCO and INS guidelines for these infusions

2. Assures the safety of patients and other staff

a. Follows all policy and procedures of the medical center related to verification of orders and products when administering chemotherapy, biotherapy and other infusion agents.

b. Demonstrates an awareness of the potentially hazardous nature of many of the agents administered and follows safe handling and disposal policy and procedures of the medical center.

c. Properly prepares and protects patients and families during infusions when indicated

d. Follows infection control policy and procedure of the medical center

e. Follows universal precautions

3. Provides care to patients as part of the overall care team

a. Communicates patient symptoms, concerns and/or reactions to Nurse Case Manager and/or physician for that patient

b. Provides psychosocial support to patients and families

4. Documentation

a. Documents assessment and infusion treatment per guidelines and policy of medical center

b. Documents patient education per guidelines and policy of medical center

c. Documents all medications and treatments administered per guidelines and policy of medical center

5. Maintains and Develops IV/CVAD skills

a. Maintain knowledge of current ONS and INS standards

b. Follows policy and procedures for IV and Central Lines of medical center

6. Other related duties

a. Takes an active role in their own education to stay current with medications they give, oncology care and treatment and current standards of ONS, ASCO, and INS.

b. Willingness to be involved in PI and LEAN processes

7. Communication and Teamwork

a. Demonstrates effective and professional communication with patients, colleagues and providers

b. Demonstrates ability to effectively intervene with a patient in crisis

c. Informs Area Manager of high-risk patient situations

d. Follows teamwork performance standards of clinic

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

1. IV experience and oncology experience preferred

2. OCN certification preferred

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

1. Current Washington State Nursing License

2. Current BLS Health Provider card

3. Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification within the first year of employment

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, family members and staff

2. Ability to work under pressure related to work/time deadlines

3. Competent in assessment and IV skills

4. Ability to work independently and use critical thinking skills

5. Competent in basic computer skills

PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS:

Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push up to 100 pounds. Must be able to hear patients and staff on the phone and those served in person and speak clearly in order to communicate information to patients and staff. Must have vision that is adequate to read memos, a computer screen, registration forms and other documents. Must have high manual dexterity. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods. Must be able to reach above the shoulder level, to bend, walk, squat, sit for up to 3 hours, stand, stoop crouch, reach, kneel, twist/turn, finger and feel.

Normal medical office environment

HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Keeps current with CPR and annual update requirements on an annual basis. Has an understanding of compliance of clinic safety procedures, including codes and evacuation procedures. Understands and follows all universal and body fluid precautions. Complies with HIPPA regulations.
