I initially became interested in healthcare while working as a wildland firefighter EMT in rural California with the U.S. Forest Service. As I explored this field, the combination of humanism with scientific rigor drew me to medicine as a career. I later participated in research in Peru with a focus on global health, but over time I came to appreciate the large need for medical care in rural America, so I refocused my efforts on this area of work.
