Robotic Surgery

What if you could have the benefits of traditional “open” surgery or conventional laparoscopies, but with less pain and a shorter recovery time?

It’s now possible—thanks to surgical robots. This medical breakthrough puts surgeons at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform that enables them to perform complex and delicate procedures with unmatched precision through very small incisions.

Between Midnight and Your Check-in Time: for your safety, your stomach must be empty for your surgery. If you eat or drink before your procedure, it will have to be postponed or rescheduled.

Robotic surgery has several distinct advantages over traditional procedures:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Quicker recovery times
  • A faster return to normal daily activities

How It Works

Officially known as the “da Vinci System,” this robot is a complex medical device designed to assist surgeons—who are always in complete control. During a robotic procedure, the surgeons sit at a console a few feet away from the operating table and place their head, hands and feet into special controls. They have full range of motion in their wrists and arms, and the movements they make with their hands are mimicked by the robotic arms and the tiny surgical instruments. Primarily the surgeons operate using a few fingers and a set of foot pedals.

Patient Success Stories

Patient Jodie Ostrem chose to have her hysterectomy done robotically. “After four days I was back to a normal life,” she said, “whereas a lot of people said they wouldn’t have gotten out of bed for two weeks.” Even more impressive was her ability to run a half marathon only six weeks after her surgery!

Robot-assisted procedures also benefit men who need their prostates removed. One patient was pleasantly surprised that he could walk around with no discomfort the morning after his prostatectomy. “I thought there would be pain involved, but there wasn’t a bit!” he exclaimed.

Robotic Hysterectomies

For many years, traditional open gynecologic surgery—which uses a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy—has been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet open surgery can result in significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and a threat to surrounding organs and nerves.

For complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery may be the most effective and least invasive treatment option. Through tiny 1–2 cm incisions, surgeons using a surgical robot can operate with greater precision and control. This minimizes the pain and risk associated with large incisions, while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

Robotic Prostatectomies

Facing any kind of urologic surgery often creates a great deal of anxiety for men. Among common concerns is “Will my body function normally following surgery?”

During traditional open urologic surgery, a large incision is made to access the pelvic organs. This has been the standard approach when surgery is warranted. Common drawbacks of this procedure include significant post-surgical pain, a lengthy recovery and an unpredictable, potentially long-term impact on continence and sexual function.

For prostatectomies and other delicate urologic procedures in which the target site is not only tightly confined but is also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function, the ideal choice is robotic surgery. By using the latest in minimally invasive surgical and robotics techniques, robotic surgery results in less pain, faster recovery times and better outcomes for men.
